Co-operatives action in canada...

While the direct investment co-operative model—where a co-operative exists for the primary purpose of investing in many different organizations—has not been applied in Ontario, there does exist a long history of co-operatives leveraging the investments of their memberships to have a social or environmental impact in our province. Local examples include consumer co-operatives (Avocado Co-operative, Together We're Bitter Co-operative Brewing, Community Carshare), housing co-operatives (Bread and Roses Co-Operative Homes & Beaver Creek Housing Cooperative) and renewable energy (Local Initiative for Future Energy Co-operative & Community Energy Development Co-Operative).

Alberta has two established local investment co-operatives (Sangudo Opportunity Development Co-operative, Crowsnest Opportunity Development Co-operative), and British Columbia (Vancouver Island Community Investment Co-operative) has one investment co-operative that provides funding specifically for affordable housing and social enterprises.
